How Coal Plants Degrade the Environment

In addition to fouling the air, coal plant pollution harms the environment in general.  Coal combustion waste has polluted ground water – people’s drinking supply.  The heavy metal emissions that make their way into the food chain will stay there for decades or longer.  Acid rain has changed the vegetation in areas.  Plus, coal plants use billions of gallons of water, competing for our diminishing fresh water supply needed by farms and communities.
