Tom “Smitty” Smith, Paul Rolke, and Ryan Rittenhouse of Public Citizen will be touring through Oklahoma and Arkansas on a film tour of the movie Fighting Goliath. They will be starting in Poteau, OK where the film will be shown after an organizational meeting involving local groups. They will be discussing ways to fight the AES “Shady Point II” plant proposed in LeFlore County.
From there the tour continues into Arkansas where the film will be shown at three locations to help organize and build support to oppose the AEP/SWEPCO “Turk” plant proposed in Hempstead County. Starting in Fayetteville on the 5th of August, with a training workshop on the 6th, the tour will continue on to Little Rock for a showing on August 7th, and a workshop on the following day. This part of the tour will end in Hope, AR on August 9th with a workshop immediately following the screening. Narrated by Robert Redford and produced by The Redford Center at the Sundance Preserve and Alpheus Media, Fighting Goliath: Texas Coal Wars follows the story of Texans fighting a high-stakes battle for clean air. The film introduces the unlikely partners -- mayors, ranchers, CEOs, community groups, legislators, lawyers, and citizens -- that have come together to oppose the construction of 19 conventional coal-fired power plants that were slated to be built in Eastern and Central Texas and that were being fast-tracked by the Governor, Rick Perry. Anyone and everyone is invited to attend. These coal plants represent a wave of new proposed facilities throughout the country that must be stopped in the interest of public health, environmental conservation, and economic stability. Coal represents one of the greatest causes of global warming, but shifting our energy generation away from coal provides us with a fantastic solution. Please see CoalBlock’s Event Calendar for time and location information. You can also contact Ryan Rittenhouse by going to our contacts section for more information.
